How to make working from home better
Dress up as you would if you were going to work
Not everyone is excited about the prospect of wearing whatever they would like when working from home. In fact, the action of wearing house clothing while working is enough to make some workers unmotivated to get their work done. If you are the type of person who feels as though being on a schedule with a daily morning ritual snaps your brain into a motivational mode, then you may be the type of person who can get more work done if you act as though you are working out of the home. Try getting yourself dressed up for the day in clothing that you would traditionally wear when going to an office. Additionally, setting a schedule will help you.
Set a schedule
A structured work environment can be much more organised and easier to navigate than an unstructured one. Setting a daily work schedule that you abide by can help remote workers keep themselves on track during the day. If you’re used to working from seven in the morning until four in the afternoon, there is no reason to change your working hours to something like 11 p.m. until 6 p.m. Continue on with the schedule that you like and are used to.
Reduce distractions
If you work from home, you run the risk of running into multiple distractions that can keep you away from the task at hand and wasting precious time finding some other project to do. To reduce distractions in your environment, pick a quiet location in your home, and set up an office in that location. If your weakness is the laundry piling up or the dishes in the sink, be sure that your office is out of view of these things. Ideally, you should pick a space where you know you can concentrate.
Interact with other people
Humans are social beings, and as such, we tend to like to be around other humans, even those of us who are somewhat more of an introvert. If you have a close friend at the office, open up an instant messenger chat and say hello. See how each other’s day is going, and lots of instant messaging programs nowadays allow voice chat. Have a quick conversation just as you would if it were a water break at the office and catch up together. This will help workers to feel less lonely and it allows people to continue maintaining strong relationships with other people.
Many remote workers and freelancers love the opportunity of being able to work from home. The freedom in scheduling, money saved on gas, and the ability to sleep until early afternoon are all benefits that can come in handy when it comes to either remote working or freelancing. Working at home can be just as lucrative as working outside the home, and in many cases even more so, but it will not be if you are unable to stay motivated to get your work done. If this is you, then the tips listed in this article might be worth trying to see if they can help you to kick start a better working environment at home.
