Getting Promoted Without a Uni Degree

While many believe that it is crucial to have a university degree in order to get promoted within the workplace environment, it is proven that this is not the case. In order to get ahead at work, one must have the proper experience. Experience trumps degrees all day long. Why is that? Well, while many may have a degree and are qualified to do the job, it does not mean that they are actually a good fit for the particular role. If one has the proper experience but simply lacks a degree, it can be overlooked. In some cases, depending upon the company, they will even decide to hire you for the position while you work on getting the necessary degree.

With that being said, the best thing one can do is to stick to their job but allow themselves to be open to trying new things at work. For example, if one has a particular duty, it may be in the best interest to try asking your supervisor if you could try executing a task that is normally done by another. Make it clear that you are wanting to expand your horizons and aren’t just not wanting to do your job. If they say yes, do your best to learn the new task properly and effectively. In time, you may be asked more often to do this task. Eventually, you can begin completing new tasks with training, which will lead to you having more experience within the workplace environment. It is important to note that not all tasks should be done by asking first. Sometimes, it’s better that your actions aren’t always acknowledged as it can become cumbersome for those who are training you. It is likely that you have payed attention and know how to complete necessary tasks at work without supervision. As long as you know the proper way to do so safely, it can show you work well by yourself.

In addition to being able to work without much guidance, another way to begin getting ahead at work is to show that you are willing to go above and beyond the average employee. This may include performing additional tasks as stated above or even working longer hours if the occasion arises. This will help build your rapport, and in turn, help you along the way. Doing such will show that you are dedicated and ready for moving up within the workplace.

Also, be willing to show that you cooperate with others very well. This goes a long way as many jobs can not be completed without the help of others. This also shows that you understand the bigger picture and know the importance of being part of a group. This is the first step to becoming a leader at work.

As well as being able to cooperate with others, you must show that you can handle stress well. Whether it be work-related or personal, it’s best to leave it out of the equation. Doing this will not only show you are the person for the job, but it will also help with the outcome of your overall work day. A smile goes a long way!

Last but not least, don’t forget that what you do outside of work matters just as much too! Whether it be volunteering or working on a personal hobby, that is what will make you stand out among the other applicants. It just might so happen that your interests may fall into line with what they are looking for in an employee.

In closing, when you feel that you are ready to move on to the next challenge at work, simply speak with your manager or hr about possible company opportunities that you would be a good match for. After all, they are there for you! Don’t forget to have a resume ready with both in and outside of work accomplishments available. As long as you keep gaining experience and looking for the opportunity, it will present itself! If all else fails, and the wanted position absolutely requires the degree, you might be able to make an arrangement about going to school for the degree while actually doing the job in question!
